2025 marks a significant year for Shanta Foundation as we embark on a crucial set of infrastructure projects in 8 (out of 17) of our partner villages in Myanmar. These projects, encompassing school construction, road renovations, water systems, and bridge building, are vital for improving the quality of life for thousands of people in rural communities.
Recognizing that strong infrastructure is a priority for every community, each village’s VDT along with Shanta project officers, guide the community in carefully selecting the most impactful projects during their partnership with Shanta. This year, these projects include:
• Education: Two primary school construction projects in Kan Lone and Pin Sone villages will provide much-needed access to quality education for young children. These schools will not only improve learning outcomes but also serve as community centers, fostering social interaction and development.
• Transportation: Three road renovation projects in Hti Bwar South, Myauk Hti Bwar, and Sim Kat villages will significantly improve connectivity, facilitating access to markets, healthcare, and other essential services.
• Water Security: Two vital water systems in Lwe Saung and Thein Lar Pyar villages will address critical water needs, improving access to clean water for drinking, cooking, and sanitation.
• Connectivity: One bridge project in Hti Par village will connect isolated communities, enhancing access to essential services and improving overall economic opportunities.
The above images are examples of what the new projects will look like. Water tanks will be easily accessable by residents, roads will be usable year round with materials made to last, and school buildings will be large enough for all students and teachers.
These infrastructure projects are not solely funded by Shanta Foundation. Recognizing the importance of community ownership, community members are active in all stages of the projects. This includes:
• Labor Contribution: Villagers contribute significent time and labor towards the construction and maintenance of these projects.
• Financial Contribution: Communities are required to contribute funds from their community banks toward the overall project costs.
These eight projects will have a profound and lasting impact on the lives of thousands of people across Myanmar. In total, these initiatives will benefit 545 households, comprised of over 2,471 individuals.
Shanta Foundation is committed to sustainable development. We provide training and support to the communities on the maintenance and management of these critical infrastructure assets, ensuring their long-term sustainability. Infrastructure plans are the most costly projects undertaken during the 6-year partnership, making them a highlight for the villagers upon completion. We look forward to sharing stories, photo and more information as these projects are completed in the coming year.
