Myanmar Today

"At least a third of all children are malnourished in this country and 132,000 children under five die every year because of avoidable diseases," says Andrew Kirkwood of Save the Children. "Aid to this country is about $3 per person per year which puts it among the lowest three countries in the world. I just think that's inexcusable."

Hardest hit are the young. Less than 50 per cent of children will complete five years of education.  They also suffer from a range of diseases including Aids and tuberculosis.

Project Goals - 2009

We have completed a really exciting trip to Myanmar in March. Joining Mike and Tricia were two certified nurse mid-wives, Linda Barnes and Rosemary Bolza, who have significant experience in developing countries, plus

  • Ron Serle, who has been helping with our micro-finance initiative
  • Tom Cheatem, professional photographer who archived our activities
  • Cynthie Tin Oo, public health expert, and her husband, Dan Fishbein, a physician with the CDC

Our project goals for this year in Myanmar are to:

  • Establish a full-time, regional health care system, with a full time doctor to address basic medical needs, patient education, preventive health and train local health care workers.
  • Set up a weeklong mobile health clinic specializing in women’s health, pre- and postnatal care, birth-spacing and patient education.  Our medical staff will also provide training for local health care workers.
  • Construct two primary schools and one regional middle school
  • Establish 5 pre-schools
  • Establish 5 village libraries
  • Pilot micro-credit program in one village
  • Construct 5 school latrines for safe sanitation
