Community Loan Fund

  • Starts with a matching grant of up to $1,500 from Shanta at the beginning of our partnership
  • Lends money to villagers at an affordable interest rate
  • Managed by an elected village committee that receives training

 

New Business Loan Fund

  • Starts with a second matching grant of up to $1,500 from Shanta in the third year of our partnership
  • Supports the establishment of new, village-based businesses
  • Managed by an all-women committee

DEVELOPMENT FUND GROWTH

Village Development Fund

  • Funded by a percentage of the interest earned by the loan funds
  • Used to pay for continuing development costs such as teacher’s salary, school building upkeep, student scholarships and new programs
  • After six years, villages generate more than $5,000 annually to spend on development

 

Pig Farms

  • 10 of the poorer families are given an adult sow to breed
  • Families return two weanlings to the Pig Farm Committee, which purchases adult sows to give to additional families
  • Average income for a poor family triples after two years

Coffee Farms

  • Training and supplies provided for all interested families
  • Cooperative marketing to Myanmar-based wholesalers
  • An acre of coffee generates more than $2,000, or triple the value of their current wheat crops
